Save the world, look good doing it and get the girl. That pretty much summarizes XXX: the Return of Xander Cage. I’m not exaggerating, there is actually a dialogue in the film that’s fairly similar. I don’t mind movies that don’t pretend to be something they are not and XXX is certainly bold about the kind of film it is. However, this movie is a complete disappointment.

Like every other Indian, I went to watch the movie because this marks Bollywood star Deepika Padukone’s foray into Hollywood. Deepika does really great Indian cinema and I naturally assumed she would choose her Hollywood debut well. Unfortunately this is not the case.

XXX is a series of mindless, predictable action sequences. It has a great  international cast for an action film with actors like Donnie Yen, Tony Jaa, Ruby Rose and even Rory McCann! Sadly, they are all terribly underused. The action is a bit ridiculous and the dialogues even more so, the most unbelievable thing however is how the women in the movie throw themselves at Vin Diesel’s character. XXX really has no excuse especially with movies like Mission Impossible or Kingsman : the secret service which have shown us that this genre can be entertaining without being mindless. This movie has an equally talented cast and a large budget but uses it to show nothing new or different.

Deepika Padukone does look fantastic and refreshingly speaks with an Indian accent but I have nothing else to say beyond that. She has moved on from cinema like this in Bollywood and one would have expected her to select a better international debut.

Let us hope for the sake of our sanity that Xander Cage never returns.
